RATIONALE

It is generally agreed that Thailand is in the process of technological and industrial development. Such development needs large number of computer engineers and engineering managers who are capable of conducting deep research in the said areas. As of 1991, no governmental university is offering any Ph.D. program directly in the field of Computer Information Systems or Computer and Engineering Management. Ph.D. program being offered are in the related-area of engineering but the number of graduates is not sufficient.

Assumption University does realize the importance and necessity of producing Ph.D. graduates in the mentioned fields. With the experience in offering the Master programs in Computer Information Systems(CIS), and Computer and Engineering Management (CEM), AU had decided to seek approval to offer Ph.D. programs in CIS and CEM. These programs will contribute to national and social development of Thailand by producing highly qualified personnel to help in training more computer and engineering managers and educators as well as researchers.

PHILOSOPHY OF THE CURRICULUM

The basic philosophy of the doctoral degree in Computer Information Systems and Computer and Engineering Management is based on the premise that graduates of the program will be employed for major segments of their careers in positions involving organizational computer information systems or computer and engineering management. They should be able to :
  1. define and plan computer information system or manage computer and engineering tasks.
  2. implement computer information systems applications or manage computer and engineering facilities.
  3. instruct students at the Bachelor's level, Master's level, as well as the Doctor's level in computers, engineering management, and related-fields.
  4. conduct research in the fields of computer information systems or computer and engineering management.

PURPOSES
  1. AU purposes
    In offering the Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Information Systems and Doctor of Philosophy in Computer and Engineering Management, AU has the Following purposes :
    • To develop human resource to be qualified in applications of and researches in Computer Information Systems and Computer and Engineering Management. This type of human resource is needed in accordance with national plan for social economic, and technological development.
    • To enable the University to utilize existing computer resources, academic resources, and administrative expertise more effectively.

  2. Purposes of the curriculum
    The curricular on Doctor of Philosophy (Computer Information Systems) and Doctor of Philosophy (Computer and Engineering Management) are intended to produce personnel qualified in the followings :
    • Qualified in the applications and research in the fields of computer information systems or computer and engineering management.
    • Qualified to be system analysts, system designers, or computer and engineering managers.
    • Qualified to manage computer and engineering activities and to become executives of computer or engineering in the future.
    • Qualified to conduct research on computer or engineering related fields.
    • Qualified to teach in the field of computer information systems (CIS) and computer and engineering management (CEM).
    • Qualified to be ethical and responsible to society and to their professions.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Background of Assumption University

ABAC or Assumption University as it is now known, was originally initiated in 1969. It was formally established in June 1972 and accredited by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of University Affairs in May 1975. The founding father of this institution is Brother Bernard Mary of the Brothers of St.Gabriel, a Catholic religious congregation devoted to education and philanthropic activities in Thailand and other countries. The congregation runs 17 educational institutions in the country.

Beginning its operation on a rather small-scale basis with only 51 students, two classrooms, three administrative personnel, and a part-time faculty, Assumption Business Administrative College has grown by leaps and bounds into Assumption University in 1990 with a student body of more than 9,000 including over 500 graduate students and a high-caliber full-time faculty supplemented by a large number of part-time faculty drawn from relevant business circles and governments offices

Administration of Assumption University

Assumption University is administered by the Board of Trustees appointed jointly by the Ministry of University Affairs of Thailand and the Brothers of St.Gabriel. The Ph.D.Program is administered by the Ph.D. Board with a member of the Board of Trustees serving as the Chairman of the Ph.D.Board.
